Post Vietnam war, fishermen in villages found a new efficient way to fish. Lots of grenades. Lots of fish. Seemed a good idea at the time.
The following year. No fish. Not such a good idea to kill baby fish as well.
Sometimes, good ideas do not turn out so great in action.
I’ve always liked this story because it symbolizes many events happening today, individually and collectively. Take one example… Have you noticed the recent dramatic rise of the eco-movement? We, as individuals and as a society, are finally learning that over-consumption of our planet’s resources will lead to the eventuality of no planet. Or at least a very damaged planet.
On a less serious note, if there were an award for “best grenade fisherman,” I would win it. I don’t know how it is possible, but everyday I manage to fool myself with what I think are good ideas, only to say “Doh! Upsy daisy!” after the fact.
